Sassy's 4th of July
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA ! The "4th of July" is a time for the "RED, WHITE, and BLUE". A time for picnics, parades, and marching bands. A time for camping, beaches, family gatherings, BBQ's, and "bombs bursting through the air" with beautiful and colorful fireworks .
On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from England and Democracy was born. In the past, every day thousands would leave their homeland to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they can begin their American Dream. The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people. Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate that freedom and independence .
Soon after the American's entrance into World War I, Henry Sterling Chapin, New York's Comissioner of Education, proposed that a national writing contest be held to establish a creed for all Americans. News of the contest quickly spread throughout the United States. By the time of the contest deadline, more than three thousand entries had been received. After carefully reading through each of these entries, the judges selected William Tyler Page's entry as "the best summary of the political faith of America." In just one hundred words, Page summarized both the American political tradition and the responsibilities of every citizen to his or her government. The American's Creed incorporates portions of the Declaration of Indepedence, the Preamble to the Constitution, and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Congress officially adopted Page's writing as "The American's Creed" on April, 13, 1918. Below is that creed: The American's Creed "I believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a Republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. "I therefore believe it is my duty to my Country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies."
The Flag Each color used in a flag has a special meaning. In the American flag, for instance, the "RED" stands for "COURAGE" , the "WHITE" stands for "PURITY", and the "BLUE" stands for "JUSTICE". Not only the colors but also the symbols on the flag are significant. The original flag bore thirteen stars and thirteen stripes--one for each of the colonies. Below are those 13 colonies: ~ Connecticut ~ ~ Georgia ~ ~ Maryland ~ ~ Massachusetts ~ ~ New Hampshire ~ ~ New Jersey ~ ~ New York ~ ~ North Carolina ~ ~ Pennsylvania ~ ~ Rhode Island ~ ~ South Carolina ~ ~ Virgina ~ Today the American flag proudly displays fifty stars, one for each state in the union. The thirteen stripes remain unchanged, reminding America of its beginning as thirteen colonies.
The Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
