Row 1: (center of bat) Working in back loop only, sc in 2nd ch from hook. sc in ea back
loop across. (14 sc)
Row 2: ch 1, (working in both loops from now on, unless indicated otherwise) sc in ea sc
across.
Row 3: sl st in first 3 sc, ch 1, sc in next 11 sc.
Row 4: ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 10 sc, turn.
Row 5: ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch and in next 11 sc across, sl st in loop
of end turning ch.
Row 6: ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sc in next 14 sc, sl st in loop of end
turning ch.
Row 7: ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 16 sc, sl st in next sc,
sl st in loop of end turning ch.
Row 8: sl st in sl st, sl st in next 2 sc, ch 1, sc in ea sc across to last sc, sl st in
last sc, sl st in loop of end turning ch.
Row 9: ch 1, sl st in first two sl st, sl st in next sc, sc in 16 sc.
Row 10: ch 9, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 ch, sc in next 14 sc, sl st in next
sc, leaving remaining st in row unworked. TURN.
Row 11: ch 1, skip 1st sl st, sl st in 1st sc, sc in 20 sc, sl st in next sc, leave last
sl st unworked. ch 1, TURN.
Row 12: skip 1st sc, sl st in next sc, sc in 18 sc, sl st in next sc. ch 1, TURN.
Row 13: skip 1st sl st, sl st in 1st sc, sc in 16 sc, sl st in next sc. ch 1, TURN.
Row 14: skip 1st sl st, sl st in 1st sc, sc in 11 sc, sl st in next sc. ch 1, TURN.
Row 15: skip 1st sl st, sl st in 1st sc, sc in 5 sc, sl st in next sc. End off.
Next: Attach yarn at remaining loop of 14th sc of row 1 of crocheted piece (center of
bat). (Locate the original yarn end where you started; you are attaching yarn on the
opposite end from where you originally made your first starting chain.)
Row 16: ch 1, sc in ea remaining loop of ea sc across. (14 sc)
Row 17: Repeat row 2.
Rows 18 - 30: Repeat rows 3 - 15.
Ears: At top of bat, attach yarn in either side row
of top of head.
Row 1: ch 6, skip next sc, sl st in next two sc, ch 6, sl st in end row.
On bottom of bat (side with four points, which is the
feet and bottom of wings), attach yarn in end of row 3.
Row 1: ch 1, sc in same st; working in end of ea row, work 1 sc in ea end of next 5 rows.
Row 2: ch 1, sc 1st two sc tog, sc in next 2 sc, sc last two sc tog.
Row 3: ch 1, sc first two sc tog, sc last two sc tog.
Row 4: ch 1, sc the two remaining sc tog.
Row 5: ch 1, sc in the one remaining sc. End off.
Eyes: (Make 2)
Rnd 1: With white, ch 2, 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st in beg sc.
Rnd 2: ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, 2 sc in ea sc around, sl st in beg ch 1. (8 sc) End
off.
Embroider black spot in center of eye.
With yarn and yarn needle, embroider mouth and teeth
on head of bat.
Holding wrong sides together, attach black in any
edge stitch. Working through both thicknesses, sc around outside edge of bat. At pointed
edges, work a sc, ch 1, sc. On the tight inside corners, use a single slip stitch.
(Optional) You may wish to slightly stuff the inside of the bat before you have crocheted
all the way around to close the opening.
Sew eyes in place on head, with edges of eyes
slightly extending beyond edge of head.
With yarn needle and your choice of brightly colored
yarn, embroider the straight stitch accents on the wings.
If desired, sc around a plastic ring to cover, then
sew this ring to the back of the head, positioned so that it does not show from the front.
